Understanding how people perceive and recognise faces.

Faces are central to how we understand other people, yet individuals vary widely in their ability to recognise identity. My research focuses on how people perceive unfamiliar faces and why some individuals are much better at this task than others.

Why this matters

Errors in face recognition can have serious consequences, from misidentifications in policing to failures in identity verification systems. These mistakes are common because recognising unfamiliar faces is surprisingly difficult.

My work aims to understand why these errors occur and how identification accuracy can be improved in real-world settings such as security, border control, and forensic investigations.

What I work on

Why people differ dramatically in face recognition ability
How unfamiliar faces are matched across images (e.g. passports, CCTV)
Applying face recognition research to real-world identification systems

Topics I comment on
